Title: Misc Donkey Kong Challenges
Post by: marinomitch13 on January 27, 2013, 03:14:45 AM
So, yesterday I was in the process of moving to a new house, when during a break in packing I decided to try the bottom-up-bottom-up challenge. Coincidentally, I got it on my first try! This was on my arcade machine, and I'm kinda disappointed I don't have a video of it, since it went surprisingly smoothly (I finished it with 4700 points total and with 200 on the bonus timer still). This was my first time achieving this on an arcade machine, so now I've finally done it on both platforms.

This gave me an idea to post a list of some of the extra little miscellaneous challenges people have come up with in the past. We can keep this up to date with maybe a list of who has achieved each of them, and I thought that would be cool.

I know I posted a list like this at TG bitd, so if you see I forgot some, or have more of your own to add, feel free to suggest them here. Like I said, in time, we can eventually start parsing out who has completed which challenges.

*EDIT* Below are some of the challenges and scores listed over at CAGDC from the years past (here: http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php?topic=4157.0 (http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php?topic=4157.0)). Many of the scores are quite out of date, but I wanted to start compiling them here for the overhaul coming up! I will edit them more to fit my purposes soon.

1-1 4 man challenge
*Mark Kiehl (44,xxx?)
*Dave McCrary (4x,xxx?)
*Ethan Daniels (42,400)
*Jeff Willms (41,600)
*Mitchell Elliott (40,800)
*Ethan Daniels (40,400)

1-1 4 man challenge no hammer
*Vincent (26,000)

No Hammer start (no deaths)
*John Mckinnell (107,500)
*Scott Cunningham (101,900)
*Jeff Wolfe (101,300)

(note to self: Make sure to snag other player's scores for the above from the linked thread^!!!!)

The "Jeff Willms challenge": Highest no jump highscore ALL lives (considering that 2-2 is the kill screen):
1) Jeff Willms 16,500
2) Joseph Carroll 12,600
3) Andrew: 12,200
4) Dean: 9,100
5) Jeff: 8,800

Highest score on a (on the first platform of any level, you ONLY move to the right, on the second platform of any level, you ONLY move to the left, on the third, you ONLY move to the right, 4rd = only to the left, 5th = only to the right, 6h = only to the left (climbing up or down is okay), and on the elevator, you move ONLY to the right until you reach the last spring platform, and on that last platform, you can ONLY move to the left (I don't know if it's possible to clear a spring levels on Stage 4+ by moving ONLY to the left, but anyway! lol):
1) Dean: 49,700

The "up-down-up" challenge on 1-1 and 5-1:
1) Vincent (1-1), Dean (1-1)

The "touching EVERY invisible walls at the EDGE of EVERY platform (There's 12 on barrel boards (including the invisible wall near DK and the one at the left of the barrel oil), there's 10 on rivets screen (and the two at the top are the hardest ones, 'cause it's easy to die while trying to touch these invisible walls!), there's 8 on conveyer, and there's 8 on elevator (I count the one that you can do when you are on the first moving platform by jumping to the left, but I DON'T count the invisible wall near Donkey Kong and where the spring comes from (it looks to hardcore, and maybe not really possible on Stage 4+ spring levels).
1) Dean: 4-1

Farthest on a "perfect low score" (800 points per stage):

One challenge a friend of mine came up with was to get 0 points on level 1-1.  I ended up pulling off and going to the rivet stage clearing all the rivets without using hammers or getting prizes leaving me with the lowest possible level 1 score of 800 points.

Post by: marinomitch13 on January 27, 2013, 11:16:43 AM
I'll edit that one in. Eventually, for the challenges that people can simply get with enough practice, it would be cool to rank them still by either time/score/#of hammers used/etc. So, for this one, it would have to be by the time that you reached the top ladder or something (if people provide that info).

I invented one last night - the "No-Ladder Challenge". Max points in one life without ever leaving the bottom girder on 1-1.

I tried it like 3 times so I'm not ready to report a score yet.  ;D

Oh yeah! This is an awesome one! I remember trying a long time ago to try to survive until the very end of the bonus timer by doing this, but I never was able to. I'll add it!

I'm the creator of the wild barrel hack. To avoid legal issues with distributing the actual hacked rom file and linking it here I've created a sort of ips patch for the wild barrel hack. Basically, since the rom is a zip with a bunch of separate binary files I had to make a separate ips patch for each binary file that I changed. In total there are 3 ips patches which I put in a zip file, each IPS patch is named according to the binary file that it should be applied to.

So, here is what you need to do to get the wild barrel hack rom from this IPS patch:
1. Unzip an original dkong rom
2. Apply each ips patch in my zip file to the corresponding file of the unzipped rom (Just google IPS patcher for a program that does this)
3. Zip all the files back up
4. Run mame on this rom (I do this by keeping the hacked rom in a separate directory from the original and when I want to play it I switch the ROMs directory in mame)

Unfortunately patching all the ips patches is a bit of a hassle (and it's also a hassle to make all the ips patches) so I could write a batch script or something to automate this if people have trouble.

The IPS zip can be downloaded here: http://www.solidfiles.com/d/5afe18f3ca/download/ (http://www.solidfiles.com/d/5afe18f3ca/download/)

I think a group of us walking Allen through this process would make for a fun stream.

Awesome, Jeff! Good way to avoid legal issues. Although, I believe it's actually some random company in Japan that owns the rights to the DK code (after the lawsuit back in the '80s over Nintendo using DK code for DKJr without permission), so I doubt they'd bother us at all. But still, better to be safe than sorry, I suppose.

That would be a bigger challenge than anything in this thread.  ;D

And welcome to the Forum Jeff!

Nobody except Nintendo and Ikegami is sure what exactly the terms of the settlement were. Some say Nintendo owns the code now, but I doubt that for various reasons, one of which being that they've never made the arcade version of DK (nor any of the other games that ITC developed, like Popeye) available on the Wii Virtual Console, or licensed it for one of those TV-plug-in games like Midway did for Pac Man. You'd think they'd have done so if they were legally free and clear, especially after KoK made the arcade version of DK somewhat commercially-viable again, at least for a little while.

Fun fact: the little icon that you use to change settings in the Braze DK kit menus is ITC's logo! The sprite was discovered hiding in the code of the original game.

Part of me feels as though we should just say "to hell with it" and make all the DK ROMs available here for whoever wants them, but there might be risks involved that aren't worth taking.

4900 on 1-1 bottom girder only (survival) (1 man). Got some good fireball luck on this one. It's not usually anywhere near this easy. I bet Phil Tudose would crush at this.

How old is that article? If "several readers" have informed the author that Donkey Kong arcade version is playable in DK64, they are mistaken because there are several obvious differences in the gameplay so it isn't the same code. Someone should let this historian know this.

A couple of similarities you will notice in the ITC alleged developed games are the look of the high score tables, and the use of L=x , P=x, or R=x for level indicators. Congo Bongo's "bonus timer" is almost identical to Donkey Kong's as well.

Nice run Jeff! Added it to the list. Also gonna add a non-survival version of this as well (since someone might get like 7k but die before the timer runs out, and that would be a bummer).

Oh, have you played the arcade version that exists in DK64? I did a long time ago (before I even started playing the arcade version), but not recent enough for me to remember how the gameplay is different...what is different about it?

The order of the boards is the same as the jap version.
I also think that you couldn't point press off of things in the DK64 version of the game.
I don't think jumping by Dk in the rivet board worked.
I could be wrong though, been a long time since I played it.

The DK64 version played a bit faster I believe.  I kinda like how you can't get the old nintendo games on the wii.  It keeps those old nintendo arcade games special.

No ladder, only point press on the very first platform of 1-1, haha, that's a good one. I think I could get 8k!... with some luck.

I'm sure it would be very tempting to abandon a good no ladder run and turn it into a good total 1-1 if you had a good start going.
Title: Re: Misc Donkey Kong Challenges
Post by: marinomitch13 on January 31, 2013, 10:10:04 PM
You're right Dave, it's pretty tempting and sometimes a tough decision to make, but it's kinda cool that a lot of the challenges kind of connect with each other in such a way that if you fail at getting the best score at one of them they can be abandoned for another. For example: bottom girder challenge->1-1 highscore -> 4 man challenge or normal game (or any of the 'highscore by level 'x' challenges').

I updated my 1-1 back jumps only score to 3800 points, as I found that I had highlighted it from a while ago. It's right at the beginning of the clip. The rest of the video is silly, as I don't even notice that I mess up grabbing the top hammer on 1-2 without doing an attempted 'back jump' (it really only has significance if you are doing it over barrels, which is why the challenge is only on 1-1). Here it is: http://www.twitch.tv/marinomitch13/c/1454002 (http://www.twitch.tv/marinomitch13/c/1454002)

And the other reason being how pretigious one run is over the other. Given 1-1 is still pretty up there to me I'd abandon another good run to try and get 14K on 1-1.

If I had to rank DK scores/challenges to how pretigeous. I'd probably have the list like this:

-DK total points (Hammer Allowed) : Of course this would have to be first
-DK total points (No Hammer)
-Best 1-1 (Yes, I still think 1-1 challenge is above the best lev 5 start)
-Best Level 5 start
-Best score by 2-3
-<everything else> (All of the other challenges of too unique to really put a value on it yet.

I don't really get into all of the little challenges, but I do some 1-1 every once in awhile. Another thing that I do for practice and to stay sharp is to go for highest score on a full level post L=5 using a save state on mame. I saw Ross going for a 70k level on his stream one time and I thought that was a pretty cool challenge. The best I have done is a low 69k level, but if I am able to actually finish a level by not dying or aborting due to a bad screen my average is usually 63k+. Also a plus for me is I find it much less frustrating than 1-1. haha

It would be extremely awesome if it were somehow possible to import threads from another forum into this one.

To be able to grab all of those classic DK threads from CAG and TG would be so epic.

Since CAG is the same forum software, it might actually be technically possible to do some MySQL voodoo and "graft" threads from there into here, but (just to begin with) you'd have to have access to both databases. The process would probably be really tedious and time-consuming.

Links will have to do!

I did one tonight that i thought was fun to try called the No Jump Challenge which is to complete a board without hitting the jump button once.  Obviously the elevators are impossible, but the other 3 are.  I cleared the rivet stage my first try and the pie factory my second attempt.  I tried the barrel boards, but that would take a lot of luck to complete.

Something I thought of last night. It's a bit long but what I call the "Rivet Pyramid Challenge".

Basically the LAST rivet you get on each level is as follows.

Level 1 = Bottom Left
Level 2 = Bottom Right
Level 3 = 2nd from Bottom Left
Level 4 = 2nd from Bottom Right
Level 5 = 2nd from Top Left
Level 6 = 2nd from Top Right
Level 7 = Top Left
Level 8 = Top Right.

I haven't even attempted this past level 3 trying this but feel this could be one of the more difficult challenges as well as one of the longer ones.

Post by: marinomitch13 on February 20, 2013, 01:43:11 PM
Haha, nice Dan. I actually thought of a similar one the other day, but I think it is a lot harder: Always get the furthest rivet away next!
Title: Re: Misc Donkey Kong Challenges
Post by: Xermon54 on February 20, 2013, 04:58:21 PM
What about the "Staal challenge"?

The rules of this challenge: You must ALWAYS use the Staal Pattern on the rivet screen
On the conveyer, you must ALWAYS go for a free path, even if there's not any free path available, you have to force it
On the barrel screens, you can't steer down the broken ladder

Haha, the hardest challenge of all!
Title: Re: Misc Donkey Kong Challenges

Here's what I think I'll do. I'm just gonna trust people on this, so don't lie or anything (pictures and INPs are still helpful if you think people will doubt you), but if anyone comes up with a challenge and wants me to add it to the list, they must set a score on it first (but it's got to be a serious score -not just like 0 or 100 on a challenge that obviously includes scoring the most points or w/e). Even if I end up with a bunch of little silly challenges, it will still be cool to have them as little distractions if people wanna have fun, or even as exercises to improve on various skills.

You should end it by falling through a rivet hole.  :D

BUMP!

People should start posting what they have gotten for these challenges. It'd be fun to fill the lists out more! I'm gonna start trying for these more often. :) Again, more challenge suggestions are welcome!

Corey: Can we Skype sometime and you show me how to set up this list in excel the way you do? I'd love to reorganize and reformat this thread to be more official. The only exception would be that I'd want the rules more relaxed but with more care taken in relation to the covetedness of the score... if that makes sense. I have some other ideas as well we can discuss.

Jeff: Can I get this added to the 'Lists' sub forum? -as I want to start making this a more serious thread. Gonna do an overhaul after I talk with Corey. Thanks!

Just a reminder and a note:

Reminder: Anyone can post a challenge idea, so long as it is rather feasible for others to replicate and compete at. If you submit an idea along with a score, that definitely ups you chances of me adding it to this list!

Note: I've added a lot of scores and some further challenges. Some of the stuff I feel is kinda sloppy right now, but bear with me, as I wanna make it all more organized in the near future. I'll be adding in further organization along stage-type and level-number lines (where applicable). I've made some further notes to myself in the main post for when I do this 'overhaul', so that messiness will go away with the change in format.

Hey now that Elevator Top Shelf is LVL 5 but thats ok people don't want to wait until then so I'll do it sooner.

Also I have gotten 800 points on Lvl 1 as well. Others I need to give an honest effort too. :)

I did the Staal pattern rivet too where you go to the farthest one. That was hard even on lvl 1-2!

Definitely cool mixes it up a bit.

Ethan and I had a BGC (Bottom Girder Challenge) Off tonight, and things got nuts!

Ethan had just gotten a huge score of 17,100 on the 4-man track and I was basically convinced that he was gonna win for the night (my best up to that point was 14,200). However... mayhem ensued on my very next attempt!:

Ethan's highlight (17,100): http://www.twitch.tv/f_symbols/c/2613275 (http://www.twitch.tv/f_symbols/c/2613275)

Mitchell's highlight (17,600): http://www.twitch.tv/marinomitch13/c/2613344 (http://www.twitch.tv/marinomitch13/c/2613344)

I'm convinced that the next level of DK skill is gonna revolve around mastering the fireball's 'decision points' to such a high level, that people feel comfortable in many of the situations we consider to be 'tough' right now. The BGC is a great challenge for acquiring new abilities for leeching and jumping fireballs all the while remaining aware of the barrels in your surroundings. Just like the wild barrel hack demythologizes wild barrels, a little BGC practice makes a player significantly more comfortable around threatening fireballs.
Title: Re: Misc Donkey Kong Challenges
Post by: f_symbols on July 21, 2013, 10:26:17 PM
I genuinely feel that the BGC greatly reduces my scaredness with regard to fire-beasts.  That challenge is also a ton of fun!

I've learned a few things about the fireballs on 1-1 in the last few days;

They travel in only 1 direction between "decision points, duh.  The distance between decision points is predictable, but not continuous; You may think you know, but you don't, I try to jump them immediately after decision points whenever possible. When they hit a wall, they bounce, this has no affect on their decision point, they could move 3 pixels off the wall and then again reverse.  The same is true for ladders, the decision point can occur before or after a ladder, and I believe the decision counter is not changing during the time on the ladder.  Level 1 fireballs can be straight-jumped, after the first speed up, especially when they are heading right.  The fact that they can move "more slowly" when traveling left must be considered when attempting to jump them especially when jumping a bouncing fireball.

Congrats Ethan!

Mitch, here is the potential challenge, Its all about grinding points off the first fireball on 1-1
but it is done by linking jumps together with as little walking as possible.

For example if you miss a jump and dont score points because the fireball went left and you jumped right, you cannot chase after it as the chain of jumps was broken.

the 100 points that apear while grinding against the fireball must stay on screen otherwise the chain is broken, I have included a link to demonstrate this potential challenge.

http://www.twitch.tv/drunkguy89/c/2614787 (http://www.twitch.tv/drunkguy89/c/2614787)

This was my best attempt, I think I counted 10 succesful jumps in a row.......I did not count the 11th since I died on that one.

Anyway I thought this would be a cool mini challenge if anyone got bored, Im unsure if this challenge already exsits but anyway, might aswell throw it out there to see what people thought, or if others could add to the challenge ....different rules or additions ect.

Almost forgot, the challenge begins the second the fireball is ejected from the oil barrel and touches the ground, this way we all have the same chance and starting point as everyone else (no waiting around till it gets stuck) see video to see starting point.

Adam.

a few submissions for the Bottom Girder Challenge...

6500 survival, 7100 non-survival, and 20600 total

an interesting note during my 7100 non-survival man. dean noticed that no blue barrels were released at 3300 OR 2500...a blue barrel was released at 4100 and the next one was not released until 1700

Added 'most points on 1-1 with no blue smashes'.

I realize that some of the scores are out-dated -especially the one's I just copied and pasted from CAGDC. If anyone looks over the list and sees that a score is missing, please post it in this thread. It's a lot less work for me, since I don't have to go around asking everyone. Thanks!

Two "challenge" ideas I was thinking about...more like jokes, I think.  ;)

1) The F10 Challenge (MAME Only)

Load up US Set 1, press F10, and see how high you can get. I've yet to grab the bottom hammer.  ;D

2) The $10 Challenge

Similar to ChrisP's "$1 World Record." How many points can you score with one roll of quarters? It would have be the total or average score from 40 consecutive credit drops...maybe the closest thing to a marathonable DK, without using the KS-fix hack. Or maybe it doesn't have to be 40 credits in one sitting, just a person's previous 40 attempts.  :P

This one has a couple of problems.  First, on a fast machine you have no chance at all so it isn't interesting.  Second, F10 has MAME run without throttle, so with a lower-end PC it won't run as fast as on a high-end PC, so not everybody would be playing at the same speed.

In recent versions of MAME though there is a "-speed" option that lets you specify a specific speed to run at.  For example if in the command line you use "mame dkong -speed 2" it will have everything run twice as fast.  This would actually be a good challenge I think.  Note that the -speed option isn't supported in MAME .106 as it was added later, so you can't do this with WolfMAME .106.  I'm not sure exactly when it was added to MAME, but it definitely isn't in .106 and it is in .126 and later.  Also, if you use the GUI front-end to MAME it may not be as easy to run with the -speed option.

Regardless, I'll propose the actual challenge of playing Donkey Kong in MAME using the -speed 2 option.

Ben and Jason have been doing some work on some of the Challenges tonight. We even came up with a new one, if anyone fancies to try it! ;D : Try to smash a barrel on the first girder!

Here's a quick pic I made of maybe (?) the fastest Rivet pattern (excluding utilizing the 'touch-and-go' technique) for anyone who wants to try to get more than my 3700 bonus left on the 1-2 rivets!

EDIT: After Jason did some experimenting on stream, it seems that using the touch-and-go method with this pattern on the top two rivets, one could get 3800!
Title: Re: Misc Donkey Kong Challenges
Post by: marinomitch13 on October 14, 2013, 03:27:14 AM
Here's another pattern that may be just as good as the first. It essentially trades a ladder for more horizontal distance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are not using the touch-and-go method, this one may be significantly more efficient, since jumping back across a gap wastes distance because your jump is much farther than a rivet gap width -so it may be more advantageous to jump over the 2nd-highest right rivet hole, since, in this case, any excess jumping distance would already be on your way towards crossing the screen anyway.

Lol. How convenient and conspicuous... Jeremy (Mr. Frame-Advance master) submitting the inp for Allen. ;) There are lots of elements of that inp that are dubious, the main one being that the way the barrel screen is played is unlike allen's normal gameplay in multiple different ways.

However, for such a coveted record, I'm afraid I can only accept twitch streams. :P

I'll believe it when I see it!

(BTW, Jeremy, you can do a lot better. Using frame advance, I could probably get another jump or two in!)

I can provide the necessary proof to demonstrate proper chain of custody regarding the INP, as well as relevant Facebook messages that support the timeline of events. I swear on my two DKF badges that I did not make this INP for Allen.

Also, the INP and WLF files seem to be from different sessions, as the checksums do not match.

Unintentionally, no doubt.  He probably just zipped the wrong WLF file.

INP file:    12/29/2013 at 10:10 AM

This only served to remind me that I need to still reorganize all of Vince's original saved data. I gotta figure out a way to organize and then display all these records better. I'm putting out a DK challenge bounty. I will give $20 at the KO4 to anyone who can accomplish this first and submit a twitch video or inp to this thread.

Challenge: Get 0 points on 1-1 while also grabbing both hammers in the process of completing the entire board safely.

I've done this with 800 points (2 barrel smashes with the top hammer and 200 points during the transition), but it seems it would take a lot more luck with barrels steering away (as well as getting wild barrels) while holding the top hammer to get this. But I just wanna see it!

Yeah, that's what he did. He also used a slightly different pattern but which still ultimately ends up to take the same amount of time as the one I came up with. The only reason I was so surprised was because I could've sworn I used the touch-n-go method on the top two rivets as well... so I thought for sure 3800 couldn't be beaten. Kongrats to Jry!

This list is (admittedly) very incomplete, but at least it is something to pull together data on random in-game achievements. I have no doubt that in the long-term it will slowly be filled in and become more and more representative of what actually has been achieved by good players in these areas of the game.

http://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/c/5334032 (http://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/c/5334032)

Excluding the points from the Level 4-5 death, the start was 108K.  I can't officially submit it for this track, but it clearly demonstrates that 110K is quite possible.  With extended grouping on the barrel boards and unhindered access to the 800 point prizes, it could be pushed even higher.

EDIT:  I forgot to attach the game summary.  Whoops!

By the way, don't ask how the rest of the game went.  I'd rather keep the unpleasant details to myself.

I caught from LV 3 on live or as a rebroadcast since I couldn't figure out why your stream quit right after you cleared LV 4.  ::)  Great stuff Scott. I won't be trying to up my start since I hate grouping before LV 5 but will be trying for a 800k KS. The year is running out and the KS still eludes me I've had two good first men in the last month (lv13 and lv14) but was unable to make it much farther.  Get that NH KS Scott, I need some new srtats to copy.  ;D

I finally managed to achieve a 100K No Hammer start with 0 deaths:  101,900 on 10/25/2014

https://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/v/45212251 (https://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/v/45212251)

The gameplay isn't terribly exciting (a fair amount of leeching on the rivet boards), but the accompanying soundtrack is from one of my favorite Phish jams:  "You Enjoy Myself"  (12/09/1995 - Albany, NY).  Simply outstanding.

As you can see from the attached summary, Level 05 was a nightmare.

Final score:  191,100  (ending on Level 6-6)

Allen got 52 top platform wall jumps on 1-2 tonight while I was watching the stream.

He also killed it on the BGC!: 3,800 for 1 man, and 15K for 4-man, with 2 survival men in a row!

Updated the pertinent tracks, and added a new one for most BGC survivals in a row.

Also, I updated his wall jumps to 55.

One challenge a friend of mine came up with was to get 0 points on level 1-1.  I ended up pulling off and going to the rivet stage clearing all the rivets without using hammers or getting prizes leaving me with the lowest possible level 1 score of 800 points.

excuse me mr i got 000000 points on 1-1 as welll fkk this abuse

Alright, Allen has been bugging me to update/add multiple records of his in this thread. Before I do anything, could someone (preferably other than Allen), let me know just what all records he's set on silly things that I need to add if he's been mentioning them to you or in the shoutbox while I've been away/busy? Thanks.

Allen, if you want to fill me in *and* can type coherent sentences so that I understand you -and if you can provide me with the links to your achievements- then I can take/deal with the submissions coming straight from you.

the two i remember him doing were...

Hammer a barrel on first girder
and
1-1 up and down every ladder (even broken ones; for the final ladder, go up the first time until you are only on the girder)

im not 100% sure if he did the 2nd one properly. he also smashed a fireball on the first girder...

http://www.twitch.tv/muscleandfitness/v/26220269 (http://www.twitch.tv/muscleandfitness/v/26220269) @ 1:50(barrel) and 5:15(fireball)

-

i cant find a highlight or video of him going up and down each ladder. he might have that
